IMPROVING SOIL HEALTH: AMENDMENTS, MONITORING, AND MODELING

International Conference

04 December 2024, Budapest, Hungary
Within the Budapest Soil Health Forum of the Agricultural Chapter of the Hungarian EU presidency (05-06/12/2024)

If you would like to attend the conference, please register first (deadline 7 Oct. 2024)

If you plan to give an oral presentation or a poster presentation, submit your abstract after completing the registration (deadline 7 Oct. 2024).

Background

Soil parameters are dynamic in nature, but time is essential for improvement. In regions experiencing degradation or at risk of degradation, it is vital to implement amelioration strategies, while monitoring is needed to maintain the quality of improved soils.

The application of soil amendments remains a contentious issue.  Current debates are focusing on avoiding the overuse of fertilizers and other soil amendments, as their long-term adverse effects may outweigh the immediate benefits.

Soil quality monitoring and modeling facilitate a comprehensive understanding of soil physical, chemical, and biological processes, which can help farmers and stakeholders to implement mitigation techniques. Advances in technology, including continuous soil and plant monitoring sensors and remote sensing capabilities, significantly reduce the need for manual labor and time investment, enabling rapid acquisition of data on soil and plant health.

Goals

The main focus of the conference is on soil conditioning, monitoring of soil parameters and how to improve soil quality in practice.

This conference seeks to promote interdisciplinary partnerships and facilitate knowledge exchange to enhance the understanding of the intricate complexities of soil systems and plant-soil interactions, thereby advancing sustainable development initiatives.

The conference is held under the umbrella of the Budapest Soil Health Forum.

Proposed topics

  1. Soil amendments, their use and effects on soil parameters
  2. Monitoring soil physical, chemical, and biological parameters, or plant growth and development
  3. Modeling soil, plant, and hydrological processes
